What you should know about Chelsea-bound Timo Werner

Chelsea are known for completing deals that no one saw coming and this move for Germany international and RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner is one of those.

Reports had heavily linked Timo Werner with a move to Liverpool, However, it appears that the Reds have decided against making a rival bid after the Stamford Bridge outfit triggered his £53million transfer clause.

This is one player who will be eased into the team immediately and we wait to see how the futures of the likes of Tammy Abraham and Michy Batshuayi will turn out Stamford Bridge after this move.

Chelsea are renowned for their towering strikers as is evident in the teams over the seasons.

However, Timo Werner is not a towering striker, a pointer that Frank Lampard will be working on altering Chelsea’s style of play the more next season.

The Germany international is not a player that will thrive in a system where numerous crosses are whipped into the box with him being the target as he is not the tallest of players.

However, he’s a very decent finisher, dangerous on the counter, likes playing short passes, and has a propensity to cut in and shoot.

The 24-year-old has carved a niche for himself in the Bundesliga and joined RB Leipzig in 2016 in a deal worth €10m. Since then, he has scored a whopping 92 goals in 154 games. The player also has some amazing records in his kitty.

Timo Werner is the youngest ever player to play for Stuttgart and is also the youngest ever goalscorer for the club. He attained these feats in the formative years of his career.

His versatility across the frontline is one advantage that the Blues can leverage. However, he has proven to be most effective as a center-forward and has scored 24 goals and provided 8 assists for Leipzig in the ongoing 2019/20 Bundesliga season.

With the likelihood of Willian and Pedro leaving this summer, Frank Lampard may deploy the German on the left, where the player has contributed 3 goals from 6 games this season.

Werner started on a lighter note at Stuttgart where he scored 14 goals in 103 appearances before joining Leipzig.

He has also been prolific for Germany with 11 goals in 29 games. He has been prolific for RB Leipzig this term and has three hat-tricks to his name this season. Other records he holds are as follows:

He is the youngest player to play 100 Bundesliga games and also the youngest player to play 200 Bundesliga games.

The player will be expected to replicate this form at Stamford Bridge as the club have only had two lethal forwards in Didier Drogba and Diego Costa in more than a decade.

Others have had mixed careers at the Bridge. His physical features do not meet the criteria of the kind of strikers Chelsea are known for.

Regardless, Timo Werner will have his chance to quash logic and myths at the Bridge on his arrival.
