Stefon Diggs’ brother learns sentencing for violent elevator attack in LA: Is he going to jail?

Stefon Diggs enjoyed a solid season with the Houston Texans and might have been looking forwards to some quiet time off in the spring break but his name has been thrust into the headlines once again as his brother has been arrested for serious crime in Los Angeles.

Diggs‘ sibling, Darez, has been sentenced to two years of probation and 20 hours of community labor for his participation in a violent attack of an unsuspecting victim in an elevator in the Californian metropolis, which came shortly after he agreed a plea deal to a felony count of grand theft.

CCTV footage obtained from the scene showed Darez Diggs involved with two other men as they committed the attack with Diggs being the man who blocked the doors to the elevator from closing, enabling the following events to happen.

The victim, named as Christopher Griffith, was pinned to the ground before he suffered blows to his head and he was then dragged out of the elevator before the trio took his jewellery following a heated exchange of words.

The victim later sued Diggs for the incident, claiming that it left him in pain, suffering and distress and he also sued for the value of the stolen jewellery, asking for $100,000 in compensation although the situation is still ongoing.

Diggs is yet to comment, and he has continued work in a football camp at the University of Maryland since as the legal battle continues to rage on.

What is the penalty for grand theft in the USA?

Grand theft is considered a felony offense, which typically carries more severe penalties than misdemeanor offenses.

In many states, grand theft is categorized into different degrees based on the value of the stolen property. For example, some states may classify theft of property valued over $1,000 as grand theft, while others may have higher thresholds.

Penalties for grand theft can include imprisonment, fines, restitution to the victim, probation, and community service. The length of imprisonment and amount of fines can vary widely depending on the specific circumstances of the case and the laws of the jurisdiction.
