Mainz reject opening offer from Crystal Palace for Jean-Phillipe Mateta

    « Back

The Guardian reports that Crystal Palace have had a bid of around €15.5 million rejected by Mainz 05 for French forward Jean-Philippe Mateta.

The south London side are said to be in the market for a new number nine this summer and view 23-year-old Mainz striker Mateta as an ideal signing.

Despite their opening offer being rejected, Palace are reportedly very likely to come back with an improved offer in the near future.

The 6′4″ attacker has scored a total of 17 goals in 52 league appearances over the past two seasons for Mainz but struggled with injuries this season.

Bild reported earlier in the week that Palace sporting director Dougie Freedman had previously been in contact with Mainz officials regarding the transfer.
