“I don’t like it and hopefully it doesn’t happen”

Veteran Liverpool midfielder James Milner has given a definitive opinion about the hugely controversial European Super League.

It has been the story that has dominated the headlines of the last 24 hours, six Premier League sides and six European counterparts signing an agreement to form a breakaway Super League.

The plans will see the creation of a new continental division played out alongside domestic leagues, with the new tournament a direct rival to the Champions League.

However, the new competition will not feature promotion and relegation, the closed shop nature of the proposals doing the unthinkable in uniting virtually every football fan across the country, with protests already haven taken place.

While most players and managers of the ‘big six’ have so far stayed quiet on the proposals that their employers have signed up, though speaking after Liverpool’s 1-1 draw with Leeds on Monday evening, James Milner was definitive in his opposition to the new tournament.

“I can only say my view, I don’t like it and hopefully it doesn’t happen,” he told Sky Sports. “I can imagine what has been said about it and I probably agree with a lot of it.”

One thing is for sure, this is a story that is going to run and run and run.
