Chelsea and Poch seemingly knew all along Kepa isn’t good enough – Talk Chelsea

This is not a Kepa Arrizabalaga bashing article, I’ve never been about that with him. I respect him as a player and I actually respect how he has been during his time with us.

Despite losing his number one spot we never saw him complain and we never saw him go to the media and do any stupid interviews like a certain striker who is still somehow at our club.

I’ve never even thought that Kepa is a bad keeper, far from it. I appreciate his close-range shot-stopping and how good he has been on occasions. But I also see his clear weaknesses that will never change and know that he is just not good enough to be Chelsea’s number one.

I’ve been vocal on this throughout. His reach isn’t long enough and he concedes too many long-range shots. I’ve said all summer that we should prioritise a new number one and I was shocked to hear and see all the reports that the club, and Mauricio Pochettino, were not looking for a new number one and were happy to continue with Kepa.

But as if by magic, it looks like those reports were most likely either tactical PR whilst the player was still at the club (you’re hardly going to say you don’t rate him and want him gone), or just slightly incorrect. But either way, it turns out that they were never planning to keep Kepa as the number one and as I have been reporting throughout, it was more due to the fact that they just didn’t think they would be able to move Kepa on due to his high wages and lack of serious suitors.

But the minute a suitor did come in and offer to pay his wages in full, they moved Kepa out literally within days. So that doesn’t look to me like anyone at Chelsea really wanted to keep him, and that’s 100% the correct decision.

Is Robert Sanchez the answer? Well, I don’t know the answer to that yet. Is he a warranted number one for Chelsea? Looking at him purely from last season you will say no, absolutely not. But if you go back a couple of seasons you would say yes, he absolutely is. Only time will tell on this one I’m afraid; so yes, it’s a risk.

But we need to see Chelsea’s next move and what profile of goalkeeper they target now to replace Kepa. But either way Kepa had to be moved out if you ask me and I am pleased that the club and Pochettino shared the majority viewpoint of Chelsea fans on this one.

My final word on this, I’d be shocked now if Kepa ever kicks a ball for Chelsea again. So with that, I thank him for his efforts and time at our club and I don’t hold any bad feelings towards him at all. I don’t think he was as bad a keeper as many think, but I’ve also known he is not good enough to be our number one on a permanent basis.

    Good luck, Kepa!
