Klopp says how long Alisson, Robertson will miss after Liverpool injuries

Jurgen Klopp is hopeful his Liverpool squad have not suffered any further serious injury blows after Tuesday’s win over Ajax saw three more players emerge as injury doubts.

The Reds claimed a 1-0 victory to advance from their Champions League group thanks to Curtis Jones’ clever finish.

The result means Liverpool win their group with one game to spare, giving Klopp an opportunity to rest some players in the final match against Midtjylland next week.

That will be timely for the Reds manager given the number of injuries his side are carrying.

Indeed, going into the game, Klopp was forced into five changes from the side that drew 1-1 at Brighton.

Among those to miss out were goalkeeper Alisson, though Klopp is hopeful he could return to action after a couple of games out.

Klopp said: “Alisson doesn’t have COVID. He told us after the [Brighton] game he felt it after 60-70 minutes, his hamstring.

“He’s had a scan, a little one, but enough for today and probably another week.”

Klopp labelled Tuesday’s win over Ajax as “one of his best nights” in the Champions League.

The match threw up more injury worries, with respective ankle and back problems for Andy Robertson and Jordan Henderson.

However, Klopp is keeping his fingers crossed for good news ahead of Sunday’s clash with Wolves.

“Both played through so I would say we have now two days more than we had last week so I think (they are OK),” he said.

“Things like this show up the next day a little different but in the moment I am positive about it. That is a problem for the next few days but not tonight.”

    Caoimhin Kelleher earns Klopp praise

Given the patched up side who went out it’s easy to see why Klopp was so happy with the win.

One of those coming in – Caoimhin Kelleher – was handed special praise.

Prior to that the focus had been all been on Caoimhin Kelleher making his European debut between the posts for Klopp’s side because of Alisson’s injury but the 22-year-old did not put a foot wrong.

He produced a number of good stops but saved his best for last to keep out veteran striker Klaas Jan Huntelaar’s close-range header.

“It is a situation where I have to say it was easy to decide for Caoimh, because he deserves it. It is difficult to decide against Adrian because he has done well for us,” said Klopp on his decision to give the Republic of Ireland Under-21 international his European debut.

“He did a really good job but tonight we needed the package of Caoimh. He is a top talent, really good shot-stopper and top footballer.

“In the end it is about keeping the ball out the net. He did that twice and he did that in an exceptional manner. He will either sleep really well tonight or not at all.”
