World Soccer Gossip: Latest on Thiago; City bid for Gimenez

Here’s your daily round-up of the latest transfer gossip from World Soccer.

    LIVERPOOL LEAVING IT LATE

Having been linked with the 29-year-old for months, Liverpool look set to wait until the final week of the summer transfer window to make an official move for Thiago Alcantara, according to talkSPORT. Liverpool’s interest in the midfielder has been one of the worst kept secrets in football this summer, so we’re not sure what’s taking them so long.

Thiago Alcantara of Spain reacts during the UEFA Euro 2020 Qualifier between Spain and Malta on November 15, 2019 in Cadiz, Spain.

Manchester United are understood to have made contact with the midfielder’s agent, but signing another midfielder isn’t currently their priority. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer already has the likes of Paul Pogba, Bruno Fernandes and new signing Donny van de Beek at his disposal.

According to talkSPORT, Liverpool have delayed making a move to try and get the best deal possible for Thiago. It’ll be interesting to see whether that’s a move which pays off or whether it’s one that they end up regretting.

    CITY BID FOR GIMENEZ

The Citizens may have already spent £41 million on signing Nathan Ake from Bournemouth, but Pep Guardiola is still keen to further bolster his defensive options. According to AS, Manchester City have offered £82 million plus £4.5 million in add-ons for Atletico Madrid defender Jose Gimenez.

Jose Gimenez of Atletico de Madrid reacts during the Liga match between CA Osasuna and Club Atletico de Madrid at El Sadar on June 17, 2020 in Pamplona, Spain.

Gimenez is understood to be happy under the management of Diego Simeone at Atletico, but he may be tempted to challenge himself by making a move to the Premier League. If Guardiola is able to add another top-level centre-back to his squad, then it’ll boost their chances of challenging in both the Premier League and, more importantly, the Champions League this season.

WEST HAM SET TO MAKE NEW BID FOR TARKOWSKI

According to the Evening Standard, West Ham are considering making another bid for England international defender James Tarkowski, after Burnley rejected the latest offer, which amounted to £30 million after add-ons.

James Tarkowski of Burnley scores his team’s first goal during the Premier League match between Burnley FC and Sheffield United at Turf Moor on July 05, 2020 in Burnley, England.

David Moyes remains keen to add a new defender to his squad, even more so after his side’s defensive frailties were highlighted in Saturday’s defeat to Newcastle United. The Hammers should have money to spend after offloading Grady Diangana to West Bromwich Albion for £18 million, and Tarkowski appears to be top of the club’s wish list.
