Woodward ‘to resign from Man Utd role’ over ESL backlash

Ed Woodward will resign from his role as Man Utd executive vice-chairman after the backlash over European Super League proposals, according to reports.

The news comes amid reports that Chelsea, Manchester City, Atletico Madrid and Barcelona have all pulled out of the proposed competition.

Chelsea fans launched a mass protest outside of Stamford Bridge, with banners criticising the club for their decision to join the controversial Super League.

Scores of fans chanted, let off blue smoke bombs and marched around the west London ground, with police attempting to control the crowds.

Owner Roman Abramovich is understood to have driven the decision, having listened to fan protests and opted to pull out of the new European league plans.

Then like dominoes there were reports City, Barcelona and Atletico had also decided to remove themselves from the competition.

Man Utd were described as ‘ringleaders as they looked to get the competition off the ground with Woodward apparently not consulted over the ESL plans.

However, talkSPORT have now claimed that Ed Woodward ‘will step down as Manchester United’s executive vice-chairman at the end of 2021.’

    The report added:

‘There have been suggestions he was not consulted about United’s plans to become one of the breakaway division’s founding members, which was set to have Manchester United owner Joel Glazer as a vice chairman.

‘The European Super League, which proposed United and 11 other ‘leading’ European clubs would always compete and never face relegation, is now off after widespread protests among football fans.’
