VIDEO: Oldham stun Colchester with most bizarre free-kick routine you’ll ever see

Oldham Athletic managed to stun Colchester United on Friday night with the most bizarre free-kick routine you’ll ever see.

A goal thriller took place at Boundary Park with Davis Keillor-Dunn scoring twice in added time to help the Latics secure a 5-2 win over the U’s in League Two.

The result meant it was Oldham’s second successive win, however it leaves Colchester – who have not won away since early December – just five points above the relegation places and at severe risk of relegation to the National League for the first time since 1991/92.

Oldham took the lead eight minutes before half time when Conor McAleny slotted home his 19th goal of the season in all competitions from the penalty spot after Tom Eastman has brought Keillor-Dunn to ground.

Alfie McCalmont then made it 2-0 to Oldham by curling home a free-kick off the post on the verge of going into the break.

Defender Carl Piergianni made it 3-0 in the 56th minute, smashing the ball into the roof of the net after substitute Nicky Adams’ corner couldn’t be cleared.

A few minutes later, the post rattled at both ends of the pitch, before Frank Nouble reduced Colchester’s deficit scoring a fine solo goal on the 64th minute, before Tom Eastman saw his long-range effort give the visitors real hope with nine minutes left.

However, Keillor-Dunn hit home twice in quick succession to make it another comfortable win for Oldham as they climb up the League Two table.

One moment in the game however went viral, with the video getting over 300,000 views in less than 24 hours as well as nearly 20,000 likes.

It’s always enjoyable when a team go out on a limb with a unique free-kick routine, especially when you don’t know if it’s going to be amazingly brilliant or hilariously awful.

Oldham however can be relieved that it worked as a few players did all they could to disrupt the goalkeeper before it was taken, with a pinpoint strike finding it’s way in off the post, watch it for yourself below…

After the game, Oldham boss Keith Curle spoke on the win: “I was pleased with the attackers, disappointed with the two goals we gave away because they came from poor decisions, needless decisions, and you get punished,” said Curle.

“It doesn’t matter what level you’re playing at, what standard you’re playing at, if you make the wrong decisions you’re going to get punished.

“But if you make those decisions you’ve got to learn from them, and that’s what makes good players. Overall the reaction was very good.

“To go 3-2, clearly a dangerous scoreline, the physicality that they’ve got, we showed a resolute side to the team, and we still posed an attacking threat.

“We didn’t go into our shell, we were brave enough to compete and were rewarded with the goals.”

Colchester manager Hayden Mullins said: “The boys are hurting and it was a tough game tonight but one that we’re going to carry into the next game.

“The boys care so much and we put so much into this game to try and get the result.

“When you come out with a negative one, it’s the boys who take it quite tough but we’ve got to take it on the chin and move onto the next game.

“We went down to two set plays and at half-time, we had a chat with them and the boys knew they needed to have a response,” said Mullins.

“In the second half, we did that and we were inches away from equalising and I think that’s where the game hinged for us.

“We could have had a penalty and I think the referee allowed him (Ryan Clampin) to play on the notion that if they didn’t score, he would bring it back and give a penalty but for some reason he didn’t.

“The play only lasted for a couple of seconds after the initial two fouls and why he didn’t bring it back and give a penalty, I don’t know.

“The second half was a real positive and they showed all of the heart and desire and played some attractive football.

“We went forward and we were a threat and created a number of chances.

“We should have got back in the game but we got hit twice on the counter attack.

“We were trying to get the equaliser and we lost the fourth goal and the fifth goal was just us switching off in the box.

“I think the boys have got to take great heart from the second-half display.”
