Update on Kieran Tierney’s fitness as Mikel Arteta hails pair of Arsenal defenders

A number of noteworthy takeaways were forthcoming in the post-Burnley press conference held by Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta on Saturday.

    Odegaard on target

The Gunners were of course back in action a short time ago.

Arteta and co. made the trip to Turf Moor for a Premier League showdown, aiming to build on a morale-boosting first 3-point haul of the season last time out.

And, when all was said and done in Lancashire, make it two wins from two is precisely what Arsenal went on to do.

A solitary goal – netted by Martin Odegaard on the half-hour mark – ultimately proved enough to separate the sides come the full-time whistle, following a hard-fought 90 minute affair.

After Bukayo Saka was felled on the edge of the Burnley area, Norwegian creator Odegaard stepped up to bend a pinpoint free-kick beyond the clutches of Nick Pope:

In turn, on the back of a testing outing on Saturday afternoon, which saw the club’s stars put to the test by an ever-physical Burnley outfit, it has since come as little surprise to see a number of Arsenal’s stars singled out for praise.

And such a theme carried firmly into Mikel Arteta’s post-match press conference, with the Spaniard having evidently been altogether impressed by the mammoth Gabriel Magalhaes:

‘We know he’s a player with an incredible future who has already given us a lot. It doesn’t get much harder than playing here in the Premier League and he was terrific today.’

When drawn on summer arrival Takehiro Tomiyasu, also showered in praise on the back of his 2nd successive stellar showing in the colours of his new club, Arteta added:

‘Both of them I think were terrific. I thought the back four in general was terrific.’

One concern on an otherwise positive day for the latest visitors to Turf Moor, though, was forthcoming on the personnel front.

The issue arrived late in the action on Saturday, when Kieran Tierney pulled up, before eventually being forced to limp off for Nuno Tavares.

The Arsenal boss, in turn, was inevitably asked for a post-match update on Tierney’s wellbeing, and went on to confirm that the Scot was suffering with ‘cramping’:

‘Again he had a problem. I think he was cramping. The pitch was pretty difficult today it was quite long.’
