Tuchel discusses possibility of Antonio Rudiger being handed new Chelsea contract

    Chelsea vs Leicester

Chelsea are set to face off with Leicester City for the second time in less than a week on Tuesday.

The sides of course met in the FA Cup final over the weekend, with the Foxes having come out on top thanks to a brilliant Youri Tielemans strike.

Tomorrow’s game, though, is arguably just as, if not more important for Chelsea, as they have not yet secured a Champions League berth, with two games to play.

The Blues will kick-off on Tuesday sitting 4th in the Premier League, two points behind Leicester in 3rd. The Londoners, though, are also just one point clear of Liverpool, who have a considerably handier end to the campaign in store.

    Tuchel on Rudiger’s contract

Ahead of Tuesday’s must-win clash, meanwhile, Thomas Tuchel spoke to the media on Monday.

The German discussed a number of topics in his press conference, including the future of Antonio Rudiger.

Rudiger has been one of Chelsea’s standout players since Tuchel arrived at Stamford Bridge, but his long-term future remains up in the air, with the stopper set to have just one year left on his contract come the summer.

When asked whether he is pushing for Rudiger to be handed a new deal in his presser, though, Tuchel explained:

“Nothing is better than what is doing for a new contract. If he wants to have a new contract he has our full support to stay at the club. He is speaking with his performances; he has been amazing since day one.

“We chose him in the first match after just one day of training. It was an unfair decision against Kurt but he’s [Rudiger’s] German and I had a clearer picture of what he can do, of course, because I’ve followed him more than Kurt Zouma. I had a clear picture of what he can deliver to a team and he took the chance.

“Since then it’s well deserved he is in the team. He is an aggressive leader, has this natural aggressivity in him. He hates to lose, is hard to beat in duels, is very brave, and full of energy in his defending. He is leading by example and has a very positive aggressivity in him.

“This is what we like. When he can channel all this into top performances, as he does now, we are all very happy to have him.”
