Liverpool chairman Tom Werner has strongly suggested Jurgen Klopp will have a limited transfer budget from which to work with this summer.
The Reds have this week been crowned Premier League champions – ending a 30-year-wait year. Read and watch how an emotional Klopp failed to hold back the tears.
But despite talk in the papers that a £54m bid is due to be made for a Napoli star, Werner has suggested it could be a quiet summer for the club.
Liverpool were one of a handful of clubs who moved to place their non-playing staff on furlough leave when the government’s job retention scheme was brought in.
But while a public backlash forced FSG to reverse the decision, it’s clear their finances have been badly hit by the global pandemic.
Liverpool recently pulled out of a deal to sign Timo Werner over the costs involved. Furthermore, a report earlier this year claimed plans to expand Anfield’s capacity had also been shelved.
Since signing Alisson in a £66.8m deal from Roma in summer 2018, Liverpool are yet to spend over £10m on any player. Indeed, Klopp’s biggest outlay in the three windows since was the £7.25m capture of Takumi Minamino.
Now Werner, in an exclusive with the Liverpool Echo, has suggested a quiet summer lies ahead.
“I would just say, you know, I was told early on about the importance of a virtuous circle,” Werner said.
“So it was very important when we came in that the commercial revenues of the club increased so we had financial stability.
“And I think that, as everyone knows, we haven’t taken a pound out as a dividend. Every pound we invest in future talent on the pitch.
“In the short term we are in a challenging situation because of COVID-19. We’ve had a lot of conversations about how to manage through this challenging period.
“We have a great squad and as you know we are investing in a new training ground and I just want to get through this period.
“I am terribly challenged by what is going on with the coronavirus, as is the world.
“My dream at the moment is to see Anfield filled with so many supporters. That sort is what I am thinking about today.”
Indeed, the Express claims there are likely to be more outgoings than incomings at Liverpool this summer.
They report Adam Lallana will leave on a free. Dejan Lovren and Xherdan Shaqiri are also likely to be sold. Furthermore, it’s claimed decisions will be made whether to sell Harry Wilson or Marko Grujic after successful loans.
Werner reveals text to Michael Edwards
A huge part of Liverpool’s success since Klopp’s appointment has been the role sporting director Michael Edwards has played.
Werner has revealed he spoke to Edwards before Klopp after their title triumph was confirmed on Thursday.
“I know Jurgen gets much of the focus of journalists. But we wouldn’t be at this point without the valuable contributions of Michael,” he added.
“He works under the radar but he’s been pivotal to the consistency of the achievements we have seen.
“If you look at the ins and out and the players he identified, not all we paid £100m for.
“He has just worked tirelessly to create this incredible environment. I text him, even before Jurgen to tell him how grateful all of us are to his contributions.”
Pep Guardiola, meanwhile, has made a classy pledge to Liverpool ahead of Thursday’s clash. Read more here.
