Transfer setback for Man Utd, Arsenal after Willian future takes fresh twist

Manchester United and Arsenal could both be set to miss out on Willian after it emerged he could stay at Chelsea beyond this season.

The Brazilian recently signed a short-term contract extension to ensure he remains with the Blues until the end of 2019/20. However, it has been expected that he will depart Stamford Bridge when the campaign concludes.

Having already splashed out on Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner, Chelsea are looking to sell a number of players in order to raise funds.

Ben Chilwell and Kai Havertz are also on Frank Lampard’s wishlist, both of whom would cost sizeable fees.

Therefore, sales are almost guaranteed this summer, and Willian was expected to be one of those shown the door.

United and Arsenal have both been linked with moves for the experienced winger if he does leave. Spurs are also said to hold an interest.

A report on Give Me Sport states that the 31-year-old may have a Chelsea future, though, as his situation takes another twist.

It says Frank Lampard is keen to keep Willian as part of his squad having used him regularly this year. Willian has featured 39 times during Lampard’s first year in charge, scoring six goals.

The report also adds that the club are reluctant to allow him to join a Premier League rival. That has convinced them to open talks over new terms, with negotiations ongoing.

Of course, it is unlikely that Willian would be guaranteed to play as often with several new faces to arrive. But, his match-winning penalty against Manchester City may have convinced Chelsea chiefs that he can still have a telling impact on the Blues’ fortunes.
