Tottenham ‘waiting’ on decision over defender – report

Tottenham have asked defender Jan Vertonghen to extend his contract until the end of the season – but the Belgian is worried about the possibility of picking up an injury which could impact his future, according to Sky Sports’ Lyall Thomas.

Vertonghen’s current deal expires on June 30, but Spurs want the experienced centre-back to sign a short-term extension to ensure that he stays at the club for their nine remaining games.

But Vertonghen, who is yet to have been offered a long-term contract, is concerned over the risk of getting injured and hasn’t yet made a decide as to whether he’ll be staying on.

The report from Sky Sports says that Spurs have until 23 June to make a decision regarding the 33-year-old’s future, meaning he could still feature against Manchester United on the weekend of 20/21 June, even if he decides against staying with Jose Mourinho’s side.

Vertonghen, who joined Tottenham from Ajax in the summer of 2012, has been an exceptional servant to the club, but it appears that he could have played his last game in a Lilywhite shirt.
