Tottenham set to trigger bargain £11m clause to sign former Liverpool man

Tottenham are being linked with a move to sign RB Leipzig keeper Peter Gulacsi this summer as they ponder life after Hugo Lloris.

The Tottenham captain has just 13 months left to run on his deal in north London and is yet to reach agreement on a renewal. At 34, the World Cup winner is seeking ‘one more challenge’. As such, he has been mentioned as a potential target for Manchester United were they to sell David De Gea.

While Lloris’ exit will come as a blow for Spurs, L’Equipe says it is something they have been planning for. They report that the club have long known that losing Lloris this summer was possible and have been scouting potential replacements.

One of the men they were considering was Lille’s Mike Maignan. However, the France keeper is likely to join AC Milan as a replacement for Gianluigi Donnarumma.

Another option reportedly being considered by Tottenham, however, is Hungary keeper Gulacsi. BILD reports that Spurs are ready to take advantage of the £11m exit clause that exists in his Leipzig deal to bring him back to the Premier League.

Gulacsi was on Liverpool’s books for eight years without ever making a senior appearance for the club. After spells on loan with the likes of Hereford and Tranmere, he has now to RB Leipzig No 1 – a position he has held for the last five seasons.

However, BILD reports that an £11m exit clause comes into affect this summer. Tottenham are not alone, however, in their admiration for Gulacsi with Roma and Borussia Dortmund also reportedly considering an approach.

Spurs are yet to appoint a new manager to replace Jose Mourinho. However, their scouts remain active and Gulacsi is one name Tottenham technical performance director Steve Hitchen is reported to have recommended.

    Murphy backs Potter appointment

Danny Murphy, meanwhile, reckons Tottenham could do far worse than consider the appointment of Graham Potter.

On the face of it, Potter appears to be a maverick selection, given Brighton’s struggles this season. However, his playing style certainly fits the profile of the type of manager Tottenham want.

Potter has also earned plaudits from the likes of Pep Guardiola for the way the Seagulls go about their business.

An impressive stat from WhoScored has also revealed that only six top-flight teams have had more shots on target per match than Brighton. The south coast side have also averaged over 50% possession.

Now Murphy admits he can understand the appeal.

“I understand [the link] because of the way Brighton play,” Murphy told talkSPORT.

“Similarly we were talking off-air about when Tottenham brought in Pochettino.

“He’d only been at Southampton for five minutes before they took him. So they could go down that route again. It might surprise one or two.

“Tottenham fans generally want someone who has been there and done it before, but they’ve just gone down that road and it didn’t work.

“So I’m not surprised he [Potter] is linked with the job, but we’ll have to wait and see.”
