Toni Kroos tests positive for coronavirus

Real Madrid have confirmed midfielder Toni Kroos has tested positive for COVID-19.

The midfielder was tested for the virus on Monday after he was identified as a close contact of a positive case. He had been in isolation since Friday, explaining his absence from their victory over Athletic Club.

A Real statement reads: “Real Madrid announces that our player Toni Kroos has given a positive result in the COVID-19 test carried out today.

Toni Kroos has been in isolation since last Friday, May 14, having been in direct contact with a person who had tested positive for COVID-19.”

Kroos has made 42 appearances for Los Blancos this season and been a key part of the side who have taken the La Liga title race to the final day. While Barcelona’s defeat to Celta Vigo sent them out of contention, Real edged to a 1-0 win over Athletic thanks to Nacho Fernandez’s strike 20 minutes from time.

Kroos has only featured in one of their last seven league matches due to fitness issues. Due to isolation requirements, he is now likely to miss their clash with Villarreal at the weekend, which could decide whether they retain the title.

Real sit two points behind leaders Atletico Madrid heading into the final round of fixtures on Saturday, meaning they have to win to stand any chance of winning the title for the second successive season.

A victory will be redundant if Atleti beat Valladolid, but Real’s superior head to head record means that if they do win and their rivals fail to, Real will be crowned La Liga champions for the 35th time.

Kroos has scored three times and registered 12 assists for Los Blancos this season and will be a big miss as they seek to get the title over the line.
