Yesterday there was a mad few hours when it was being reported that new Chelsea goalkeeper Edourard Mendy could actually be fit to play against Sevilla this evening, despite it appearing he would miss the game though injury.
When the news came out, it was literally the ‘be all and end all’ news that Chelsea fans were desperate to hear, the difference between winning and losing the game.
But it isn’t just the Chelsea fans who are desperate to see Mendy back, Frank Lampard getting him back in the squad and likely starting him against Sevilla this evening after being out injured, says all you need to know on the trust that the manager has in Kepa Arrizabalaga, or Willy Caballero.
But you can totally understand why. If Mendy was in goal against Southampton on Saturday, Lampard and Chelsea would have got all three points and won the game, that is almost factual.
Kepa made a terrible error that lead directly to a goal, and could have done more for their third goal. Yes there is no 100% guarantee that Mendy would have done any better, but I would put my house on him not running out and missing the tackle like Kepa did.
Mendy had a thigh injury, and has trained once. So if he does start this evening, I don’t care what anyone says, it carries a risk and is certainly desperation.
But just like the fans desperation to see Mendy back, I too am also desperate and can completely understand this decision.
Remember, this is all after only seeing Mendy play a few games for Chelsea, but already he is the unanimous saviour.
Kepa is finished at Chelsea, there really is no way back for him now. His confidence is at zero, and so is Lampard’s confidence in him.
