The all-time highest transfer fees

At the end of every season, clubs embark on strengthening their squads after evaluating their performance.

Football fans and punters on Betway and other sportsbooks usually follow these proceedings closely. Clubs are not afraid to break the bank whenever they feel buying a particular star would increase their chances of silverware. Here are some of the highest transfer fees of all-time.

    10. Virgil van Dijk

Popularly known as VVD by fans around the world, the defender moved from Southampton for 75 million GBP in 2018. The Liverpool captain is currently the most expensive defender. The sale of their star Coutinho made it easy for Liverpool to splash the cash.

    10. Luis Suarez

In 2014, Suarez switched from Liverpool to Barcelona for 75 million GBP. Suarez had established himself as one of the most lethal strikers in the world. After failing to land silverware at Liverpool, he successfully switched to Barcelona, where he has won various medals.

    10. Romelu Lukaku

Jose Mourinho bought Lukaku while at Manchester United for 75 million GBP in 2017. He had initially sold him while at Chelsea when Lukaku was a youngster. He has since switched sides to Inter Milan for 74 million GPB.

    9. Gonzalo Higuain

The prolific Argentine striker moved from Napoli to Juventus for 75.3 million GBP in 2016. His goal-scoring prowess saw his value rise. His move to Juventus, who are Napoli’s rivals in Serie A, annoyed the fans significantly.

    8. Cristiano Ronaldo

In 2009, Ronaldo joined Real Madrid from Manchester United for 80 million GBP. He later developed to be arguably the greatest footballer in modern football. His achievements on the pitch made him a favorite among fans and punters on Betway.

    7. Gareth Bale

Bale joined Real Madrid from Tottenham for 85.3 million GBP in 2013. Bale was the most expensive player in the world for three consecutive years before the record was broken. His stay in Madrid has had many controversies.

    6. Cristiano Ronaldo

Ronaldo joined Juventus from Real Madrid for 88 million GBP. With only a few years left in his career, this was a clear indication of what the Portuguese has achieved in his career. The move shocked many, but Ronaldo continued his record-breaking tendencies while at the Turin club.

    5. Paul Pogba

Pogba rejoined Manchester United from Juventus for 89.3 million GBP in 2016. It was a great piece of business for Juventus, who bought him from United for a meager 500,000 GBP in 2012. There have been rumors of Pogba moving back to Turin or Madrid as his stay at United has not been fruitful.

    4. Ousmane Dembele

Dembele joined Barcelona from Borussia Dortmund for 96.8 million GBP in 2017. The fee has add-ons that could make the cost of the player rise to 147 million Euros. So far, Barcelona have not yet reaped the benefits of this hefty price.

    3. Philippe Coutinho

Coutinho joined Barcelona from Liverpool for 105 million GBP in 2018. Coutinho had taken the premier league by storm scoring tremendous goals. He was a favorite for punters on Betway and other sportsbooks for his incredible performances. He was unable to produce the same level of performance while in Barcelona. There are rumors that he could return to the premier league.

    2. Kylian Mbappe

Mbappe moved from Monaco to PSG for 160 million GBP in 2018. The French teenager joined PSG on loan before the deal was made permanent. He has had a significant impact on the performances of the team. He is also expected to be on the radar of other European giants like Real Madrid this summer.

Neymar’s transfer from Barcelona to PSG for 198 million GBP in 2017 is the world record transfer fee. If you factor in other wages and bonuses, the price comes to almost half a billion US dollars.

As the summer transfer window opens, it’s unlikely that this record will be broken as clubs grapple with the pandemic’s economic effects.
