The 4 soon-to-be free agents Newcastle have targeted for January

Word stemming from the English media on Monday suggests that Newcastle United have set their sights on as many as four Premier League starts tied to expiring contracts, ahead of the January transfer window.

    Howe arrives

The highly-anticipated new era at Newcastle of course took a major step forward two weeks ago today, courtesy of the long-awaited appointment of the club’s new manager.

On the back of the big-money Saudi takeover on Tyneside, and ensuing dismissal of Steve Bruce last month, speculation had been rampant regarding just who would be entrusted with the reins on the bench at St. James’ Park.

A whole host of tacticians, including the likes of Unai Emery and Paulo Fonseca, were initially tipped for the post.

On Monday November 8th, though, much to the relief of the Magpies faithful, confirmation was finally forthcoming that the club’s wealthy new owners had made their decision.

The man chosen to replace Bruce? Eddie Howe:

    Quartet eyed

Howe, in turn, is expected to be afforded a considerable war chest with which to add some much-needed reinforcements to his new squad of players in January, with Newcastle, as things stand, firmly entrenched in the Premier League relegation battle.

And, as outlined above, on Monday, an insight into precisely who the Magpies’ boss, and board alike, have set their sights on has been provided.

The info comes courtesy of Scott Wilson of the Northern Echo, who reveals that Howe is keen on bringing in player who have already proven themselves in the Premier League.

This comes with the Englishman prioritising maintaining his side’s status in the top-flight, at the potential expense of long-term planning.

In turn, stars on expiring contracts, as well as those struggling for game-time with their current clubs, have been identified as the most suitable winter targets.

And when it comes to precise profiles befitting of such requirements, the quartet of James Tarkowski, Jesse Lingard, Divock Origi and Oleksandr Zinchenko are understood to be high on the agenda on Tyneside.
