Monday morning came with the news that Frank Lampard had been relieved of his duties as Chelsea manager.
The club legend has been removed from his position with immediate effect – but many football fans believe he deserved more time to turn the tide.
On a day of change for Chelsea FC – we take a look at the top five highlights of Lampard’s reign.
#5 – Wolves 2-5 Chelsea
Early into Frank Lampard’s tenure, a trip to Molineux showed a new Chelsea with multiple academy graduates performing excellently to earn a hard-fought three points. With a Tammy Abraham hat-trick, a tidy Mason Mount finish, and a wonder-goal from Fikayo Tomori made a big statement about Chelsea’s intentions for the 2019/20 season. With many having written Chelsea off at the beginning of the campaign, the result at Wolves proved that Chelsea weren’t going to roll over and that their previously under-used academy had enough quality to clinch Champions League qualification.
#4 – Ajax 0-1 Chelsea
Put simply, this game was the first sign that Frank Lampard’s Chelsea could be defensively resolute when it mattered most. A trip to Amsterdam is never an easy task, and Chelsea’s young team put on a determined display against the European heavy-weights and came out on top in an important group stage fixture with a late goal from Belgian striker Michy Batshuayi.
#3 – Arsenal 1-2 Chelsea
A win at the Emirates is always a sweet one – but coming from behind by scoring twice in the last ten minutes is a special feeling. Having conceded inside fifteen minutes, late goals from Jorginho and Abraham turned the game on it’s head to secure three points for the Blues. The result showed the fight possessed by Frank’s team and the ability to keep going in tough moments.
#2 – Tottenham 0-2 Chelsea
When the student became the master. Chelsea’s visit to North London was a successful one as Frank took on his former boss Jose Mourinho and came out on top. Pre-match build-up surrounded the pair’s former professional relationship and it was Lampard who came out on top as his side put on an electric display to win the game 2-0. A story of growth and revenge – the romantic aspect of the game meant this was a particularly important moment in Frank’s managerial career and meant so much to so many Chelsea supporters.
#1 – Ajax 4-4 Chelsea
One of the most exciting games in Chelsea’s recent history. Chelsea hosted the Dutch champions in the Champions League and having gone 4-1 down at home, the situation looked bleak. However, after two Ajax red cards and an emotionally charged display from Frank’s men, the Blues clawed the game back from the realms of impossibility with goals from Jorginho, Azpilicueta, and academy graduate Reece James secured a vital point in the group stage. Although it may be surprising that a draw has taken the top spot, Frank helping to restore the excitement and passion at Stamford Bridge gave Chelsea fans around the world something that has been missing from the club for some time.
As the sun sets on his managerial reign at Chelsea, it’s important to remember just how much Frank Lampard has done for the football club. Both as a player and a manager, Lampard brought passion and excitement to the pitch and an undeniable love for the badge. Although it is goodbye for now, Frank’s legendary status remains fully intact.
Thank you Super Frank!
