Ciprian Tătăruşanu was presented to the press today, saying ‘I see that the club wants to do big things’.

Tătăruşanu is Milan’s third signing of the summer after Brahim Díaz (presented on Friday), Sandro Tonali (presented yesterday). Today, the 34-year-old was presented to the press at Milanello:

“If I’ve feel there’s confidence in me and plans for me considering I signed with Milan until 2023? Yes, of course. I see that the club wants to do big things, we’ve seen that they’ve managed to achieve things during the transfer window and I am very confident.

“If there was talk about the history of Steaua București against Milan during my years there? Of course, before I went to Steaua I was a fan of the club because I lived close to the stadium and my father was a big fan, that’s what I grew up with. Seeing Steaua’s big performances in European football, the final they won against Barcelona and then the final they lost against Milan… they were a great team and all of the kids in school at that time were dreaming of signing for Steaua and of winning the Romanian league title. I was lucky at that school and I was fortunate enough to realize my childhood dream.

“The role of Italy in my career considering I made by Romania debut against the Azzurri in 2010 and I played also at Fiorentina? Yes as you said, I played a friendly against Italy and that was my Romania debut. But we played that game in Austria in Klagenfurt and now with the senior national team we played at the same stadium and I remember that my first cap was won in that stadium. That’s the way it is. A number of Romanian players have played their football in Italy, it’s a bit easier for us… as Romanians we settle quite quickly in Italy.

“If being ready when called upon at Milan important for me in terms of the national team next year’s EUROs? Yes, absolutely. The national team is very important for me, I’ve won a lot of caps for my country and I want to continue to do well because we have our play-off against Iceland next month. I have to prepare as best I can here, I have to give absolutely everything in training day in and day out and make sure that I’m ready when the head coach calls upon me.

“If I’m keen for European football perhaps also with fans in the stadium, considering I just finished the season with Lyon in the Champions League semi-finals? Sure, it’s not easy to play a league match or Champions League match without fans. There are already some supporters, up to 5000 in France, that’s not many of them but it still gives you a different feeling because they clap, they talk, they cheer you on, it seem a little bit better… it’s not nice to play without fans. I hope they will be able to open the stadiums here in Italy as well so the fans can come and see us because we play football for the supporters ultimately.

“How did it feel when I heard there was the opportunity to come to Milan? I was happy, when a big club such as Milan that has won so much in the history of football and so many great players have played for this club… naturally I was very happy. I very quickly took the decision to come here and thankfully I’ve made it.

“The role of being a second-choice goalkeeper and if I feel ready to step in when called upon? That was the role that I had in Lyon and it’s the same position that I have at Milan. It’s not easy because you need to train at 100% day in and day out in the knowledge that on Matchday you may not go out there to play. However, I like a challenge as a goalkeeper, I always give 100%. When the opportunity arises I hope I’ll be able to help the team out as best as I can.

“The Fiorentina-Milan game in 2016 in which Iličić hit the post from the penalty spot and if I’ve noticed how Donnarumma is able to intimidate opposition players when they step up from 12 yards? Yes, I remember that game – I think it ended goalless in Florence. Donnarumma is very good, he’s tall and he pushes off well, he’s good at saving penalties and so it’s not easy for a penalty taker to focus and score when you’re up against a goalkeeper like him because they have to strike the penalty very well. I’ve also saved a lot of penalties, we’re very high so perhaps that’s the reason why players lose their lucidity.

“What did Pioli and I say to each other when we met here at Milan considering we already worked together at Fiorentina? I think we only worked together for two weeks in a pre-season training camp, so I haven’t worked a lot with him. But he told me immediately what he wants from a goalkeeper as soon as I came here and the job a goalkeeper has to do in this squad.

“If Pioli made an impression on me during that brief period we worked together? It really was just pre-season, it wasn’t a long period of time. There weren’t any competitive matches.

“Would I like to finish my career at Milan? Why not…? It’s a great team, I think a lot of players dream of doing exactly that.

“What can I contribute to the team from a personal perspective? I try to give everything out there on the pitch because in the end that’s the most important thing. But in the dressing room I’m a new player so I still need to create ties and bonds in the dressing room and with my other teammates.

“If there’s something Donnarumma can learn from me considering he’s very young? He’s young only for his age… You should ask him that, as a goalkeeper I’ve pinched things from all of my colleagues because we all have strengths and weaknesses. That’s something you can pick up from colleagues, it’s a career, and it’s a profession – something that you learn, so you can also pinch things from other colleagues.

“If any youngsters I didn’t know before strike me in my short time at Milan? I’ve only trained once with the team, it’s difficult to say whether someone has struck me or not.

“What do I like about Serie A and what is my best memory of it so far? Serie A is very demanding, I was already used to that with Romania and Fiorentina, it’s a very demanding league and you really need to focus on fine margins and the small details. That’s what I like about it… it’s not necessarily easy at the start, because I’ve moved here from Ligue 1 which is very different from Serie A but I’ll do everything in my power to readapt to the demands of Serie A and the expectations of the head coach and the club.”
