Steffen Baumgart calls upon FC Köln board to back him in January

FC Köln head coach Steffen Baumgart has called upon the club’s board to back him in the January transfer window this winter, Sky Germany reports.

The main priority for the billygoats this season is simply to survive relegation from the Bundesliga.

Currently 15th in the league, Köln have registered just two wins this season and are avoiding the relegation places on just goal difference.

Baumgart has been vocal about what he wants during the January transfer window. That’s to be backed by the board and sign additional players, in particular a striker.

“If there is no money, it has to be found. It has to be possible to act differently than what we are currently doing,” explained the 51-year-old.

He continued:  “It’s very important. I would like to talk about reinforcements in winter, they are necessary and important.”

Baumgart also pointed to the past few seasons where the club have lost valued players “and then keep running into the hill.” He simply says, “that doesn’t work.”

One player who was recently linked with a move to Köln is out-of-favour Youssoufa Moukoko from Borussia Dortmund.

Head coach Stefen Baumgart has already said he requires a striker in the January transfer window, and what better person than Moukoko?

The 19-year-old is experienced for his age, knows the Bundesliga well, and is on the lookout for regular first-team football.

However, the only potential downfall is Moukoko’s €6m per year salary at BVB. Köln can’t afford such wages right now. This means a loan deal is the only possible way of securing the forward’s services this winter.

What’s more, it remains to be seen if BVB would even let Moukoko go at all. Either way, Köln are in for a very important transfer window.
