Spurs to challenge Arsenal for signing of powerful defender | Shoot

Tottenham’s season is all but over and it has been another frustrating campaign for Spurs.

Despite possessing one of the most fearsome attacking lines of Harry Kane, Son Heung-min and Gareth Bale, the club are set for another year outside of the Champions League.

While they did reach the League Cup final, their performance at Wembley left much to be desired as Man City ran out 1-0 winners in what was a relatively simple contest for Pep Guardiola’s side.

It is especially disappointing considering the Lilywhites came flying out of the traps at the beginning of the season, hammering Manchester United 6-1 at Old Trafford, outclassing Manchester City 2-0 at home and even briefly leading the Premier League.

Unfortunately their defensive frailties caught up with them once again, and Jose Mourinho paid they price as he was sacked at the beginning of April.

While Spurs are yet to have decided who will be in the dugout at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium next season, reports from TEAMtalk have suggested they are wasting no time in the search for a new defender as they aim to challenge Arsenal to sign Denmark international Joachim Andersen.

Andersen has made 29 appearances this season.

This season has also been a frustrating one for the Danish defender who had been battling relegation with Fulham until Scott Parker’s side were consigned to Championship football after a 2-0 home defeat against Burnley.

While the Cottagers did go down, Andersen’s battling displays in West London have impressed Arsenal and Spurs, and both clubs are reportedly set to approach his parent club Lyon to bring him to the capital permanently.

The 24-year-old has made 29 appearances for Parker’s side this year, and his performances have allegedly put a £25.8 million price tag on his head.

While Spurs are not a club known for splashing the cash, owner Daniel Levy may reflect on their failure to sign a big name defender this season – will it make him look to the cheque book?
