Dele Alli will miss Tottenham’s long-awaited return to Premier League action on Friday week after being handed a one-match suspension following a breach of FA ruling in relation to a social media post back in February.
The 24-year-old recorded himself on Snapchat appearing to mock an Asian man amid the Coronavirus pandemic. According to PA journalist Jonathan Veal, one of Alli’s Snapchat friends sold the video to a paper.
Alli later apologised and removed the video before admitting that he let both himself and the club down.
He has also been fined £50,000 for his actions.
Following the conclusion of the case, Spurs released a statement from Alli on the club website. It said: “In response to the FA decision, I would like to apologise again for any offence caused by my behaviour. It was an extremely poorly judged joke about a virus that has now affected us more than we could ever have imagined.
“I’m grateful that The FA has confirmed that my actions were not intentionally racist because I despise racism of any kind. We all need to be mindful of the words and actions we use and how they can be perceived by others.”
It’s a major blow for Jose Mourinho, who’ll be without one of his big game players for a reunion against his former side. Alli has scored nine goals and added six assists in all competitions for Spurs this season – including a stunning solo effort during Tottenham’s 2-1 defeat at Old Trafford back in December.
