Spurs defender admits “things are moving” amid talk of summer exit

Tottenham defender Jan Vertonghen has hinted his future is edging closer to being sorted as he nears the end of his contract.

Last week we relayed confirmation from Spurs that Vertonghen has extended his current deal – which was set to expire in the coming days – until the end of the season, ensuring Jose Mourinho will not be short of defensive options for the remainder of the Premier League campaign.

However, Vertonghen does not appear to be any closer to agreeing a new long-term contract with Tottenham, meaning he is likely to join another club ahead of the 2020/21 season.

And now, in an interview relayed by EN24, the 33-year-old has told Sporza his future is in the process of becoming clearer.

“I can’t say much about it but things are moving a lot,” Vertonghen said. “Only, most of the teams are waiting for the end of the current competitions and to be sure to touch their TV rights.”

It certainly sounds like Vertonghen is edging towards the exit door given the fact he mentions waiting on other clubs to make their moves.

The centre-back’s future has been a source of speculation throughout the season, ever since he was initially left out of the squad by Mauricio Pochettino at the beginning of the campaign.

His game time has not increased under Mourinho, and so it looks like Vertonghen may have played his last match for Spurs.
