Solskjaer reveals he’s only focused on ‘improving’ Man United and not catching City

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says his focus is on ‘improving’ Manchester United and not catching runaway league leaders Manchester City.

The Premier League’s top two meet in a hugely anticipated Manchester derby clash this weekend, though the stakes have been somewhat reduced following the Red Devils’ stuttering recent form.

Solskjaer’s side have drawn four of their past five league fixtures to fall 14 points adrift of City, who look poised to win a third Premier League title in just four seasons under the guidance of Pep Guardiola.

Sunday’s opponents are also on a run of 21 consecutive victories in all competitions and Solskjaer admits his focus is solely on this weekend’s meeting at the Etihad and not overhauling the champions elect.

“Our focus is on this game, not where we are going to end up,” Solskjaer said at his pre-match press conference.

“We want to be the best possible Man Utd and try to improve on last season, get to a final and win a trophy. They are ahead of us by a fair distance.

“I can only control what is happening at Man Utd, there are so many differences between the clubs. They are the only team ahead of us at the moment. It’s a fantastic spell, with great form and 21 wins.”

United will hope to have Anthony Martial and David de Gea available for this weekend’s derby clash after both players missed the draw at Crystal Palace, though Paul Pogba and Juan Mata remain absent through injury.
