Silva stars as City set new goal-scoring record

David Silva was in inspired form as Manchester City brushed aside their defeat to Southampton with a 5-0 thrashing of Newcastle at the Etihad.

From start to finish, City made no secret about their intention to go guns blazing. An emphatic response from their shock defeat to Southampton.

Pep Guardiola brought Kevin de Bruyne, Phil Foden and John Stones into the side after their 1-0 defeat against Southampton, making five changes altogether.

It only 10 minutes for City to open the scoring. Gabriel Jesus ended his nine-game goal drought by converting from David Silva’s cutback.

It wasn’t long before they got a second. Riyad Mahrez swept home the second from Kevin de Bruyne’s pass. That was De Bruyne’s 18th assist of the season.

It got worse for Newcastle in the second half. Federico Fernandez saw a clearance deflect off him into his own net as Dubravka watched helplessly.

Silva then turned goalscorer as he curled in a sublime free-kick to secure the fourth for City. Celebrations around the Spaniard seemed like that may well be his last goal at the Etihad.

Raheem Sterling came off the bench to add the fifth for City in injury-time, rolling in from Silva’s pass.

In scoring these goals during their superb performance, City wrote themselves into the history books (again).

Mahrez’s strike was the all-important one, as it moved him on to ten Premier League goals for the season. He joined Sergio Aguero (16), Raheem Sterling (14), Kevin De Bruyne (11) and Gabriel Jesus (11) in having netted at least ten goals this term.

This means a remarkable FIVE City players have hit double figures for league goals in 2019/20. The citizens are the first team to ever achieve this feat in the Premier League era.

City would be looking to secure another impressive win when they take on Brighton at the weekend.
