The Athletic journalist David Ornstein has confirmed that Manchester City are in talks to sign Anderlecht fullback Sergio Gomez.
It was reported in the Belgian media yesterday that the Citizens were pursuing a deal for the 21-year-old and Ornstein has now backed up those claims:
? Man City working on deal to sign Anderlecht left-back Sergio Gomez. 21yo Spain youth int’l seen as development talent; move is irrespective of 1st team targets. #MCFC remain in market for senior recruit & considering various options @TheAthleticUK #MCFC https://t.co/fVjeaHvVGP

Gomez is an attack-minded player by nature, so he isn’t a like-for-like alternative to Marc Cucurella, and fans on Twitter have been discussing whether he has the right attributes to play in a back four:
Sign him please ???

Gomez doesn’t seem much more developed than JwE to me. Another midfielder turned LB. Good going fwd, defending needs development. Just pay the $50m ffs…

City are undoubtedly looking at Gomez as one for the future. He is still young and developing his game, so there is every chance that he will improve as a defender.
The Spaniard’s attacking numbers cannot be argued with, though. For Anderlecht last season, he scored seven goals and racked up a hugely impressive 15 assists in 49 appearances.
Those figures have attracted the interest of other clubs, including Chelsea and Manchester United, but City appear to be clear favourites for his signature at the moment.
