Seven times Roy Keane has ripped into a Man Utd player this season

    Quick Reads

Despite being a Manchester United legend, Roy Keane has never been shy of criticising players at his former club.

Keane doesn’t pull any punches as a pundit and has a reputation for being brutally honest, even if it might upset a few people.

We’ve looked at seven times where the former Republic of Ireland international has criticised United’s players in 2019-20.

    David de Gea

De Gea was once regarded as one of the best goalkeepers in the world, but the Spain international has made a series of increasingly high-profile errors this season.

During United’s game away against Everton in March 2020, he gifted the hosts a goal after three minutes, taking too long on the ball before Dominic Calvert-Lewin blocked his attempted clearance into the net.

Keane was left infuriated by the mistake and claimed that he would have ‘lynched’ him if he was in the dressing room.

“Whether I was a player or a manager, I’d have killed him,” Keane told Sky Sports. “What is De Gea waiting for? It’s crazy.

“There’s almost a bit of arrogance to him. I would have lynched him at half time. There are no excuses.”

    David de Gea (Again)

    Poor David.

The goalkeeper was at fault once again during United’s 1-1 draw against Tottenham in June 2020, parrying Steven Bergwijn’s effort into his own net.

Keane didn’t want to kill him on this occasion, but he was still pretty angry and called De Gea ‘the most overrated goalkeeper he’d seen in a long time.’

“I would be fining him at half-time, there is no getting away from that,” Keane told Sky Sports.

“I would be swinging punches at that guy. That is a standard save for an established international goalkeeper.”

    Harry Maguire

Maguire became the world’s most expensive defender when United forked out £80million to bring him to Old Trafford from Leicester in 2019.

But Keane wasn’t convinced and still believes that the centre-back is susceptible on the turn, highlighting his lack of pace.

“If I was a striker, I would love to be playing against someone like Harry Maguire,” Keane told ITV Sport in September 2019.

“He clearly lacks speed and hasn’t got the positional awareness to anticipate the danger, so it’s easy to play against him.”

    Paul Pogba

Pogba has divided opinion with his performances since returning to Old Trafford in 2016 and Keane has been one of his biggest critics.

After United’s 1-1 draw with Arsenal in September 2019, the 48-year-old didn’t hold back in his analysis of Pogba’s performance in midfield.

“They need more from Pogba. We gave him the big build up before the game – he’s the best player, blah, blah, blah. He was disappointing. So poor,” Keane told Sky Sports.

    Andreas Pereira & Fred

Ahead of United’s game against Liverpool in October 2019, Pereira and Fred were seen chatting to fellow Brazilian Roberto Firmino in the tunnel.

The sight of United and Liverpool players embracing each other in the tunnel ahead of one of the biggest fixtures in the world clearly sickened Keane to the core.

“I’m disgusted with the players. You’re going to war, they’re hugging and kissing,” Keane said on Sky Sports.

“Don’t even look at the opposition. You’re going into battle against them. The game hasn’t changed that much, the players have changed. You’re going to war against these players and they’re hugging each other.

“Chat to them after the game, or don’t even chat to them after the game.”

    Luke Shaw

It doesn’t take much to annoy Roy Keane.

Shaw was warming up whilst wearing a hat ahead of United’s game against Liverpool in January 2020 and for some strange reason that tipped Keane over the edge.

“When I see Shaw coming back into the team… the nearer we’re getting to kick-off, the more worried I’m getting,” Keane told Sky Sports. “I was fine about two hours ago. But when I see the players getting warmed up in silly hats…”

United did eventually lose 2-0 so maybe he was right…

    Anthony Martial

With United 1-0 down against Liverpool in January 2020, Martial surged through on goal but blasted a glorious opportunity over the bar with a wild shot.

The striker has struggled with consistency at Old Trafford and Keane believes that he’s simply not good enough to be representing United.

“Martial, you come to Manchester United you have to go bang in the big moment. For me, that sums up his career in a nutshell at Man United,” Keane told Sky Sports.

“Excellent build up play but you hit that target, no excuses. You hit that target, the big strikers at Man United who are remembered by the supporters, they certainly hit the target and hit the back of the net.

“That’s why that guy is not quite good enough for Man United. That moment summed him up.”
