Sergio Aguero injury: Manchester City striker undergoes knee surgery in Barcelona

Premier League Highlights: Manchester City vs Burnley

Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero could miss a lengthy period of time due to a knee injury suffered in Monday’s 5-0 win over Burnley that required knee surgery. With City in second place in the Premier League, the club cruised to a victory where Aguero only played the first half, coming out for Gabriel Jesus in added time in the first half.

The club said he suffered damaged to his left knee. Under the direction of Dr. Ramon Cugat, Aguero had the surgery on Wednesday.

“Everything went well and I will soon begin recovery,” Aguero wrote on Twitter. “A big thanks to Dr. Cugat and his team — and to all for so much support.”

While the news likely isn’t significant for City when it comes to the Premier League as the club is 17 points clear for Champions League qualification, this is something to watch in relation to August. That’s when the UEFA Champions League will conclude with single-leg matches is Lisbon, Portugal. City faces Real Madrid in the second leg of their round of 16 clash before that quarterfinal round, with Pep Guardiola’s team having gone to Madrid to win 2-1 in the first leg.

Aguero is City’s top striker, he is the club’s all-time goal scorer, and he’s had a great season so far with 23 goals in 32 games. He’s averaged 30 goals over the last six seasons. If he can’t go in the Champions League, then Gabriel Jesus will certainly be the starter. The quick, clinical Brazilian has 18 goals in 41 games so far this season and is four goals away from setting a personal single-season record.

City is the favorite to get past Real Madrid and move on to the quarterfinals, but not having Aguero makes City a bit less threatening. If he can go, the talent is there for the club to win the competition for the very first time. Without him, it would make an already difficult task that much harder.
