Schmeichel names Man Utd player who Ole has improved the most

Peter Schmeichel doubts Fred would have played for Man Utd again if Ole Gunnar Solskjaer hadn’t helped improve his performances.

The Brazilian has been one of the standout performers for Man Utd this season, after a difficult start to his career in England.

Jose Mourinho signed Fred for £52million in his final summer at the club, but the 27-year-old struggled to adapt to the Premier League in a difficult period at the club.

Solskjaer led the Red Devils on an 11-match unbeaten run in all competitions before the Premier League was halted and Schmeichel reckons Fred has benefited the most from the Norwegian.

“I think Ole’s done a very good job,” Schmeichel told The Metro. “He’s had limited opportunity to adjust the squad. There’s been speculation about so many players since he stepped through the job but he’s dealt with that so well.

“He’s got players playing fantastically well that nobody thought would play for the club again like Fred. I think he’s been key to a lot of the good things that have happened in this run.

“Things are slowly starting to look like they have forward momentum in terms of better play, better defending, solid midfield and then the creation that you’re used to at Manchester United. Hopefully we’ll see some more of that.

“I’m of the opinion that what we have is very good and what I’ve seen Ole do in this short period he’s done fantastically well.

“I think his transfer window in the summer with the three youngsters coming in. Harry Maguire is club captain [but] Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Daniel James [too]. I thought that was so positive.

“They were not players brought in to win the Premier League the next day they were brought in to build the team for the next two or three years. I’d rather that happened than chasing names. They have to fit in at the club and I trust Ole. I trust his judgement.”

Man Utd will travel to Tottenham on Friday in the first of their matches following the Premier League restart.
