Ryan Fraser deal agreed with Southampton – Report

There finally appears light at the end of the tunnel for Newcastle United with Ryan Fraser.

With it now reported that a deal has been agreed for the 30 year old to join Southampton on a permanent basis.

The report comes from the very reliable Athletic, who say their information is that the broad agreement has been reached between the parties, with just the final details to be ticked off.

A disastrous signing by Mike Ashley and Steve Bruce, Ryan Fraser has been anything but a bargain ‘free’ signing.

Having cynically ran down his contract at Bournemouth and refused to keep on playing at the end of the Covid affected 2019/20 season, Ryan Fraser watched on as Eddie Howe’s side were relegated.

Fraser then moving for massive wages to Newcastle United, with no transfer fee to be paid.

A ridiculous five year contract was handed to Ryan Fraser and four years on, Newcastle United have paid out a massive amount in wages, including significantly subsidising this past season at Southampton.

In return for the massive sums Ryan Fraser has pocketed, the winger only starting 30 Premier League matches and scoring two goals.

Everything crossed that this deal does go through and United get Fraser off the wage bill for good, as he currently still has one year remaining.

Southampton’s promotion means they have the money to satisfy the player’s wage demands.

As the Saints went up, Ryan Fraser only started 15 games during this promotion campaign, though he was more a regular off the bench, making 27 sub appearances.

The end of this month sees another very expensive ‘free’ signing depart, Jeff Hendrick arrived in the same transfer window as Ryan Fraser, but ‘only’ got a four year NUFC contract off Bruce and Ashley, one year less than Ryan Fraser.
