Arsenal are ramping up their interest in signing Sporting youngster Joelson Fernandes, according to reports from Portugal.
Arsenal are stepping up interest in Joelson and are weighing options on whether to make a move for the highly rated youngster.
As well as the Gunners, 17-year-old Joelson is being monitored by clubs such as Barcelona and RB Leipzig as he closes in on a first-team debut for Portugal.
From Cristiano Ronaldo to Nani, and Luis Figo to Ricardo Quaresma, Sporting are well known to build a lot of talent as youngsters
Joelson is considered by those at the club to be the next in line. Due to that, they are trying their best to convince him to sign a new contract.
The wonderkid’s current deal includes a release clause of £40m, but Sporting are so confident about his potential that they’d like to raise it to £90m.
But Joelson and his representatives don’t want to go any higher than £70m over fears of the pressure a three-figure sum would place on his young shoulders.
According to Portuguese newspaper O Jogo, Arsenal have not been put off and have sent a representative to find out the chances of prising their target away from his club.
It may seem unlikely that Arsenal currently have the funds to pull off a deal for Joelson but the Gunners have surprised in the past.
Moreso, the chances of Arsenal spending such an amount on a youngster is rather slim considering they face a window where a number of tough decisions would have to be made. Financial ones inclusive.
