Roma denied penalty after five-minute VAR check

Roma were denied a penalty in their eventual 1-0 win over Torino after a VAR check, which took five minutes and 20 seconds to complete.

A goal from Tammy Abraham is all that separated the sides at the Stadio Olimpico on Sunday evening, with the result ensuring the hosts remained within touching distance of the Serie A top four.

However, it could have been smoother sailing for Jose Mourinho’s side. Torino’s Alessandro Buongiorno brought down Stephan El Shaarawy in the penalty area just after Abraham’s opener, but the England striker, who stepped up to take the spot kick, was left waiting for over five minutes as the decision was verified.

VAR officials had to check whether Abraham was offside in the build-up, and eventually concluded that the forward had gone too early – though it was only his heel that was beyond the last defender.

Mourinho was incensed on the touchline, and after a stuttering start to life back in Italy that has not been without officiating controversies, was delighted to have claimed a vital three points.
