Relief for Liverpool as Jurgen Klopp and Co avoid new quarantine rules

    Date published: Thursday 20th August 2020 8:07

Liverpool are not expected to be affected by new UK coronavirus quarantine rules which will come into force from Saturday.

The reigning Premier League champions are currently in Austria taking part in a pre-season training camp.

On Thursday they learnt their schedule for their title defence – and were handed a mouthwatering start.

Austria, along with Croatia and Trinidad & Tobago, will be added to the list of countries where people entering the UK will have to quarantine for 14 days upon arrival. The new rule applies from 04:00 on Saturday.

But the PA news agency understands that, because Liverpool are also playing matches in Austria, they will be exempt from quarantine. They must first, however, apply for an application through the FA. This is something which is believed to be currently being completed.

Had the trip been purely for training purposes, the potential to have to then quarantine would have been much higher.

Although it is unclear when Jurgen Klopp’s side will return it will be after Tuesday. That’s when they face RB Salzburg, having already played Stuttgart on Saturday.

With no restrictions upon their return it means Liverpool will then be clear to return to Melwood as normal. The Reds will then prepare for the Community Shield clash against Arsenal on August 29.

Reports earlier in the week suggested a member of Liverpool’s travelling party to Austria had tested positive for coronavirus.

Protocols were put in place before travel and have been adhered to since arrival. Tests were being conducted before and during the Austrian training camp. Liverpool headed there having shelved their initial plans of travelling to Evian. That’s after France was earlier added to the UK quarantine list.

Klopp harbours new concern over Thiago

Liverpool, meanwhile, continue to be linked with a move for Bayern star Thiago Alcantara.

Thiago’s seven-year, trophy-laden spell with Bayern will likely end this summer. He has turned a new deal, with CEO Karl-Heinz Rumminegge willing to negotiate a “fair offer”.

The Spain international is reportedly keen to move to Liverpool. Indeed, Bayern boss Hansi Flick has said he would “understand” if Thiago wanted to master a third top European league after his time with Barcelona.

While previous reports have stated Liverpool are uncertain of paying the £27m needed to sign him, a new theory has emerged why a deal could be overlooked.
