Rasmus Hojlund and Douglas Luiz clash after hand gesture made towards Aston Villa fans

Rasmus Hojlund and Douglas Luiz got into a clash after the Danish player made a hand gesture towards the Aston Villa fans.

Hojlund got into a heated exchange with the Villa Park faithful as well as Douglas Luiz after rattling the crowd towards the end of Sunday’s televised Premier League fixture.

The 21 year old, opened the scoring for the away team after just 17 minutes, marking his fifth goal in five consecutive matches.

Aston Villa were level on the 67th minute through Luiz looked poised to secure a draw in the final moments of the game.

However, Scott McTominay came off the bench once again came through and scored the winning goal just four minutes before the end of the match.

In the second minute of stoppage time, Hojlund was substituted and rather slowly made his way off the field, after he celebrated McTominay’s goal by placing his finger over his nose, gesturing home fans to be quiet.

The Villa supporters were not pleased with his slow departure and voiced their dissatisfaction, but in response, Hojlund raised two fingers with his left hand and one with his right, reminding the crowd of the scoreline before gesturing for silence once more.

This only further angered the Villa fans, with some even standing up to shout at him, but then Luiz got involved, grabbing his opponent by the shirt before being replaced by Jonny Evans.

Subs used: Diaby (7), Tielemans (6), Zaniolo (n/a), Digne (n/a)

    Man Utd: Onana (8); Dalot (7), Maguire (8), Varane (7), Shaw (6); Casemiro (6), Mainoo (6), Fernandes (7); Garnacho (7), Hojlund (7), Rashford (7)

Subs used: Lindelof (5), McTominay (7), Amrabat (n/a), Evans (n/a)

Player of the match: Harry Maguire (Man Utd)

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag talking to Sky Sports: “It is a massive win for us. We’ve got closer and that was the aim for today. That was absolutely our target and we’ve done it. The way we did it, I liked it. I especially liked the first 20 minutes when we controlled the game. At 1-1 we had to fight back and we are really happy for today.

“At 1-1 you always have to see how the game progresses and I think it was really high intensity and you could see how many players were fatigued by the end. It was so open and it could go two ways but we found the mentality and character to win the game. The subs also had an impact.

“Scott [McTominay] is great. He can score many goals. He’s always coming into positions to score goals. We had problems, it was too much like a tennis match, we had problems in the counter-attack. We knew Scott would get into the box and can score goals.

“The players were going for goals because they are offensive but it was better in certain situations to keep the ball, drag players out and that was the idea to bring an extra midfielder into there.”

Erik ten Hag: “Our set pieces were very good. Our defensive organisation in the first part was very good and we had moments on the ball we were calm but once we scored we changed our mindset but for me you must play on. You can do this at the end but not when you are dictating the first 20 minutes, you must keep going on.

“I never think about negative situations. I’m thinking positive, we have to catch up but we are not there yet. We are in a good mood and we have to keep this process going but there is so much space for improvement. There are many games left to play and we’ll see what happens.”

On Luke Shaw, who was taken off at half-time: “Precaution. He had some complaints and we can’t take any risks with him because he’s had any injuries in the past. We’ll have to see how it goes in the next few days. It’s not an advantage to lose him, everyone knows my philosophy to have left-footers at left centre-back and left-back. We have to make compromises and it is not to our advantage.”

Manchester United defender Harry Maguire to BBC Match of the Day 2: “It is a really tough place to come. We started the game really well and I felt like we deserved the lead and then we probably weren’t as aggressive and as brave as we were in the first 20 minutes and allowed them back in the game.

“Our main problems came from set-plays and corners and crosses so it is something we need to work on. When we conceded we showed great spirit and fight to stick with it at a place like this that was rocking.

“You relish playing when you win. They are a good team and have shown it at Villa Park. It was relentless in the second half and we know we have players on the bench that can come on and win football matches for us.

“He [Scott McTominay] is playing a little bit higher up. He is a great finisher and we see it every day in training. He can play numerous positions. He has great timing and is a good finisher when he gets on the end of things. He made a big impact and long may it continue.

“We are not where we want to be in the league. It’s been a tough season so we knew we needed to come here and get the three points. We are still not where we want to be and we need to step up. We have got ourselves in a position where we can challenge to go and get in the top four. It is important we stick together and take this club back to where it should be.”
