For many, the Premier League’s restart has offered a brief respite from the doom and gloom that is plaguing the the world at this very moment — no pun intended. Unfortunately, that group of people appears to not include Arsenal supporters, and center back David Luiz.

Arsenal’s Premier League return against Manchester City was going relatively fine until about 45 minutes into the match when a mistake from the Brazilian defender, who had just been substituted in just 21 minutes prior, led to Raheem Sterling’s first goal in 13 games across all competitions. A cross inside the box deflected off of Luiz’s thighs as he made a strange effort at defending.

It was a silly mistake, and Luiz’s reputation for reckless defending might have exasperated the anger that Arsenal supporters might have felt about it in the moment, but it was rather small in the grand scheme of things. The play was made to look even worse just a few minutes later, however.

As Luiz was defending winger Riyad Mahrez, he placed his arm around the neck of the Manchester City player, who went to ground inside the penalty box. The referee determined it was an offense worthy of a red card, and gave the penalty to City. Kevin de Bruyne would convert from the spot to double his team’s lead over a side with only 10 men.

It was far from a banner day for the Arsenal defender, who has given more penalties than any other player in the premiership this season. The good news for him is that he’s not the first person to have a match that has gone this poorly.
