    The Portland Timbers (9-4-3) are playing like the elite of the MLS.

    The MLS is Back Tournament Champions started off the restart of the MLS Regular Season struggling, but now after five consecutive wins the Timbers are tied for first place in the Western Conference. 

    Seattle and Portland each have 30 points with 16 matches played.

    The latest victory came Sunday evening with a 3-0 win over the San Jose Earthquakes (5-7-5), who was on a three-game winning streak of their own heading into the match. 

    Jaroslaw Niezgoda led the Timbers in scoring with a brace getting the ball into the net in the 46th and 52nd minutes, respectively.

    Then Felipe Mora would get his seventh goal of the season in the 86th minute off an assist from Diego Charà and Marvin Loría.

    After not registering a clean sheet in any contest since March, the Timbers once again posted a shutout, the team’s third in four games. Goalkeeper Steve Clark had seven saves in the contest including two spectacular saves off of San Jose corner kicks to keep the ball out of the net in the first half.  

    Next, the Portland Timbers will travel to Rio Tinto Stadium to play Real Salt Lake on Wednesday, October 14th at 6:30 p.m. PT.
