Pogba spoke with Varane ‘at length’ ahead of Man United deal being struck

Paul Pogba’s role in Man United’s deal for Raphael Varane revealed

Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba did his part in convincing Raphael Varane to link up with the club this summer, it has been revealed.

    United’s latest recruit

The headline news on the red half of Manchester last week of course came in the form of the club’s swoop for Blancos stalwart Varane.

Just a week after finally pushing a long-awaited deal for Jadon Sancho over the line, the Red Devils inched ever closer to the club’s 2nd statement signing of the summer.

An agreement between the respective boards at Old Trafford and the Bernabeu was first reported to have been struck for an initial fee of around 34 million pounds.

This comes with Varane’s contract in the Spanish capital due to expire in 2022.

And Real themselves then went on to confirm the imminent departure of the club’s long-time stopper in an official statement across their social media platforms, last Tuesday:

Varane’s signing, for obvious reasons, has since been widely hailed across Europe, with United, amid the club’s efforts to return to the top of English football, finally set to secure a world-class partner for captain Harry Maguire.

Upon initial links between the World Cup winner and Red Devils coming to the fore, however, Varane actually committing to an Old Trafford switch was heavily doubted.

This comes with the 28-year-old accustomed to winning at the very highest level, and United having not exactly excelled on the silverware front over the course of the last decade.

As outlined above, though, one oft-maligned member of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s squad may well have played a central role in convincing Varane that he would ultimately be rewarded for making the move to Manchester.

As revealed by reliable outlet The Athletic, ahead of a deal being struck for his services, the Frenchman was contacted by compatriot and soon-to-be Red Devils teammate Paul Pogba.

The pair, in turn, are understood to have discussed the merits of an Old Trafford switch ‘at length’.
