Player Awards: The winners | Southampton FC

Southampton striker Danny Ings has capped an incredible year by winning both of the club’s Men’s Player of the Season awards for 2019/20.

Ings, who scored 25 goals across all competitions, including 22 in the Premier League, was the unanimous winner among his teammates of the Player’s Player of the Season prize, sponsored by Monster Energy, with only his own vote going to someone else.

    i’m extremely humbled by it.

The boyhood Saints fan, who was second in the Golden Boot race during the most recent campaign, was also a runaway winner of the Fans’ Player of the Season award, sponsored by Virgin Media.

Ings, 28, earned more than 80 per cent of supporter votes, as he added his name to a prestigious list of players who have claimed the coveted trophy over the years.

Speaking about the acknowledgement from his teammates, the forward said: “It’s nice to know you’re doing everything you can for the team and the lads are noticing that.

“I’m extremely humbled by it, it’s my hometown and to win this award from all of the lads is huge. I can’t thank them enough for everything they’ve done throughout the season to help me score the goals I have.”

On being recognised by the fans as well, Ings said: “It’s great, it’s really nice and I felt that as soon as I came to Southampton I had a great bond with the fans and that’s carried on through the two seasons so far.

“It’s great and thanks to everybody that did vote for me, it means a lot and gives me great hunger to improve and be better.”

Elsewhere, fans also had their say on the 2019/20 Goal of the Season award, sponsored by Imperial Cars, with Ché Adams’s incredible long-range effort in the 1-0 home win over Manchester City edging out Moussa Djenepo’s spectacular solo goal away to Sheffield United.

There was also acknowledgement for new Southampton captain James Ward-Prowse, who was chosen by honorary club president Terry Paine for his annual President’s Choice Award for the second year in succession.

Ward-Prowse enjoyed a tremendous campaign, in which he achieved the remarkable feat of playing every single minute of Premier League action.

Terry Paine said: “Obviously, Danny Ings was always going to be number one among the fans and players, but I like to make sure I recognise someone else who has made a really significant impact.

he’s really someone who you get the whole package with.

“The fact James Ward-Prowse played every minute in the Premier League I think speaks incredibly highly of him, and being made the captain shows the respect that exists for him within the club.

“To achieve what he has is not just about what he does on the day on the pitch, it’s how he will need to look after himself off the pitch too.

“Being captain adds extra pressure on your shoulders in terms of your own performance, and you sometimes need to look to your captain for inspiration, and he has certainly provided that, especially when it comes to his free-kicks and set-pieces around the box, so he’s really someone who you get the whole package with.”

Will Smallbone was named First Team Young Player of the Season

First Team Young Player of the Season, sponsored by Utilita, was awarded to Will Smallbone, following a breakthrough campaign for the youngster, with the 20-year-old making ten appearances in the senior side during 2019/20, including an unforgettable debut when he scored in a 2-0 FA Cup third-round win over Huddersfield.

Scholar of the Year, Alex Jankewitz

Scholar of the Year, sponsored by Kuflink, went to another young midfielder, Alex Jankewitz, as the highly-rated Swiss teenager was recognised for an impressive campaign in which he shone for both the Under-18s and Under-23s.

As previously publicised, the Women’s team issued their awards earlier in the summer, with Ella Morris taking both the Fans’ and Players’ Player of the Season prizes, while Rachel Panting won the new Southampton Way Award as well as Goal of the Season.
