Manchester United want to sign a top Italy keeper and will watch him tonight, while Leeds have been snubbed by a top defensive target, according to Saturday’s paper gossip.

Manchester United are keen to sign Napoli goalkeeper Alex Meret, according to reports.

The Italy-capped keeper has emerged as a genuine target for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer this summer.

According to the Daily Star, Solskjaer wants Meret to sign to heap pressure on David De Gea at United.

To that end, United scouts plan to watch Meret in action against Barcelona on Saturday night.

As per the report, Solskjaer will resist calls to send De Gea packing this summer after an error-strewn season.

Since football’s return, the Spaniard has let his usual high standards drop with some big mistakes.

That has led to calls that United should sell him and promote Dean Henderson after his Sheffield United heroics.

But Solskjaer feels Henderson needs another year’s loan before being brought back to United.

Instead, he wants to sign a keeper with more experience to keep De Gea on his toes- and Meret fits the bill.

The 23-year-old is regarded as one Europe’s most promising keepers. He has been capped at every level from U16 upwards. He made his senior debut in the 9-1 victory over Armenia in 2019.

Meret’s contract ties him to Napoli until 2023 and is rated at around £30m.

United would offload Sergio Romero were they to land Meret. Leeds have been linked.

United have also been linked with a move for Kasper Schmeichel.
