Nottingham Forest are hoping to appoint Dane Murphy as the new CEO at The City Ground this summer.
What’s the talk?
That’s according to a report by The Athletic, who claim that the Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis is looking to shake up the Reds’ hierarchy over the summer, with Barnsley CEO Dane Murphy at the centre of the Greek’s plans.
It is reported that the club’s current chief executive, Ioannis Vrentzos, has stepped down from his role at The City Ground and will be moving back to Athens, something that has subsequently opened the door for an approach for Murphy.
Would Murphy be a good appointment?
Fans are right to be buzzing
Having brought in a whopping 17 players last summer, many of whom were given contracts on extremely inflated wages, Nottingham Forest went on to endure a rather disappointing season in the Championship, with Chris Hughton’s side managing just a 17th place finish in the second tier.
As such, it would indeed appear that something at the boardroom level is not working, a problem that Murphy could be the solution to.
After his appointment at Barnsley, the 35-year-old American made a number of bold changes at the club, including the hiring of Valerien Ismael, with the results of the CEO’s actions seeing the Tykes go from a side battling to stay in the division to one that reached the play-off semi-finals in the space of just two years.
As such, with Hughton looking to build a side that is capable of mounting a promotion push in the club’s upcoming campaign, should Marinakis realise his wish of appointing Murphy at The City Ground this summer, the chief executive’s history would seem to indicate that the Reds’ chances of going on to achieve this feat would be significantly increased.
Indeed, this is an opinion that Forest fans seem to share, with one taking to Twitter to state their belief that the 35-year-old’s potential appointment is something to finally be “excited about” at the club, while another claimed that Murphy’s arrival “could be huge” for the Garibaldi’s future – and, we have to say, these fans certainly appear justified to be buzzing about the potential incoming.
