‘Not any closer to discovering his best position’ – Five talking points as Spurs edge past Birmingham

Tottenham ran out 1-0 winners over Birmingham City in Saturday’s pre-season friendly thanks to Steven Bergwijn’s late winner.

Here are five things we learned from the game.

    1. We still don’t know Gedson’s best position

Gedson Fernandes continues to be a strange signing for Spurs, given that Jose Mourinho doesn’t quite know what to do with him.

The midfielder has played at right-back during pre-season but today started in an attacking role – he hasn’t convinced in either position.

    2. The same goes for Sessegnon

Sessegnon probably has a bigger future in north London that Gedson, but we’re not really any closer to discovering his best position either.

He looked OK on the wing in the first half and at left-back in the second half, but didn’t do enough to suggest he should be pushing for a starting spot on that flank.

    3. Jack Clarke needs a loan

Jack Clarke played for over an hour and impressed in moments, but the former Leeds United youngster clearly needs another loan.

Spells with Leeds and QPR didn’t go well for him last season – hopefully the club can find him a better temporary home this term.

    4. Harvey White takes a mean free-kick

Young midfielder Harvey White has stood out during pre-season, if only for his ability from set-pieces.

Eric Dier missed a couple of headed chances from dangerous White free-kicks, which should prove useful to Spurs’ Under-23s or perhaps a loan club this season.

    5. Bergwijn can be a lethal finisher

The unerring accuracy of Steven Bergwijn winning goal was reminiscent of his debut strike against Manchester City.

With time and more opportunities created by his teammates, the Dutchman could become lethal in Tottenham’s attack and chip in with plenty of goals.
