A non league club have made an approach to sign TOWIE star and former footballer Mark Wright, according to reports on Friday.
The former reality TV star played at academy level for West Ham, Tottenham and Arsenal before hitting the TV screens for The Only Way Is Essex.
He has since turned into a presenter and radio show host, but National League South side, Billericay Town, are looking to give him the opportunity to reignite his playing career.
The non league side want to sign the 33-year-old, who has regularly played and impressed in Soccer Aid – on a wage of £600-a-week.
The celebrity scored a stunning free kick at the 2016 Soccer Aid, which saw then-Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho offer him the chance to train with the first team.
A football source has said: “Jamie has known Mark for a while and has long-admired his ability on the pitch. He played to a decent standard as a youngster and was a professional for a time before focusing on showbiz.
“Now Jamie has offered him a late lifeline back into football. It won’t be a groundbreaking wage but it could see him earning money to play the sport he loves again.
“And it would make Michelle easily Britain’s most glamorous Wag. The locals in Billericay are going to be gobsmacked.”
Wright previously signed a professional with Southend United in 2005, however he only managed 21 appearances over six years.
In January 2012, it was reported that he rekindled his semi-professional footballing career, by signing for St Neots Town, but this was denied by Wright on his Twitter account.
Football runs in Mark Wright’s family, with brother Josh playing in defence for League Two side Leyton Orient.
Billericay boss Jamie O’Hara is said to have been overheard telling guests at a recent event that he was confident he could get his man.
One guest says: “Jamie said he was sure he could convince Mark to sign. The club’s new owners have also had conversations about him joining and they’re hopeful that between them they can get it done.
“They’ve sold it as a win-win to him as he loves football anyway, so why not earn a few quid for it?
“Plus he’s massively into his fitness and what better way to keep in shape than a competitive 90 minutes plus regular training that fits in around his day job.”
Wright had appeared to be announced at Glenn Tamplin’s Romford back in January 2020, before the social media post was deleted.
The post was captioned: “Romford fc are extremely blessed to have my close friend MARK WRIGHT join us as left back and joint owner of ROMFORD FC .
“Amazing player/friend to have as a business partner to grow the club.
“He is extremely passionate about playing and building a community club.”
But the post was deleted hours later without explanation, leaving Wright’s position up in the air.
