Nketiah credits killer instinct for Southampton opener

Eddie Nketiah suggests he could sense the opponent goalkeeper was going to make a mistake, which is what led to his goal against Southampton.

A comfortable 2-0 win against Southampton on Thursday helped Arsenal jump back to the upper half of the Premier League table.

One of the big talking points of the match, other than Arsenal managing to put behind their recent rough patch, was Eddie Nketiah’s goal.

In a goal that showcased his cool-headedness, Nketiah punished Alex McCarthy for an embarrassing mistake of gifting him possession to put his side in the driver’s seat.

Later, substitute Joe Willock gobbled up on another of the Saints No. 1’s fumble confirm all three points for the Gunners.

Nketiah, who has found himself in a similar goalscoring situation a number of times previously, is delighted to have finally made one count.

“I could smell a bit of uncertainty from the goalkeeper. I followed it in, I’ve done that a hundred times, so it’s nice one of those leads to a goal,” the young forward told Sky Sports.

“We work a lot on our high press and I think we did it well today. And for me, personally, I try and give it all to the team.

“It was a very important three points. It’s really hard in the heat to keep going but I think we did that.”
