Liverpool captain Niamh Fahey has signed a new contract with the Reds ahead of their return to the WSL this coming season.
Fahey has previously won three WSL titles with former clubs Arsenal and Chelsea, plus two top flight title before the WSL era, and five FA Cups and three League Cups during a trophy-laden career.
The Irish centre-back briefly left English football in 2017 to spend a year in France with Bordeaux, but has been with Liverpool since 2018 and is a lifelong Reds fan.
Liverpool were relegated from the WSL in 2020, before going on to win the second tier Women’s Championship last season to secure their place back in the top flight for 2022/23.
“It’s brilliant, I’m so excited for the year ahead and I’m delighted to extend my stay. Getting to lift the trophy last season with this group of girls and staff, there’s nowhere else I’d rather be. It wasn’t even a decision,” Fahey said.
“It’s something that has sunk in over the summer and obviously makes me very proud.”
Liverpool manager Matt Beard added, “Niamh was outstanding last year, a great leader on and off the pitch. Her performances last season, even in the big games, were fantastic. Her experience will be something we will need next season. She’s a great character, technically she’s a very gifted football player and a very, very good defender.”
As well as Fahey signing a fresh deal, Liverpool have also boosted their defensive ranks this summer by bringing in Gilly Flaherty following her departure from West Ham. The pair have previously played together for both Arsenal and Chelsea and are now reunited on Merseyside.
