The subject of Newcastle United transfer targets is getting more relevant by the day.
The win over Burnley was of course very welcome, indeed essential in most people’s eyes.
So whilst there is increased optimism that this current set of players can improve further under Eddie Howe and performances on the pitch reflect that, there is of course still an overwhelming acceptance that extra quality is needed via the January transfer window.
Only 24 days now until that next window opens and time marches on.
We saw reports in recent days stating that a meeting had taken place last week, which involved Eddie Howe and current head of recruitment Steve Nickson, as well as others.
Now The Mail say that their sources have given them information on five Newcastle United transfer targets that were discussed at that meeting last week, with Eddie Howe putting these names forward.
Those five named as:
Lloyd Kelly, a 23 year old left footed centre-back who Eddie Howe signed for £13million from Bristol City in 2019 when he was at Bournemouth. He has helped Bournemouth to the joint best defensive record this season, only 17 conceded in 21 Championship matches.
Matthias Ginter, the Borussia Monchengladbach and Germany centre-back is out of contract in the summer. Right footed, he turns 28 in January.
Joe Rodon, the 24 year old right footed central defender joined Spurs for £10m but only made eight Premier League starts last season and has made only one PL sub appearances so far this season.
Sven Botman has been reported earlier this week as a Newcastle United target but a transfer fee of at least £40m is said to be needed to tempt cash-strapped Lille to think of selling mid-season. The now 21 year old left footed centre-back was a key figure as Lille had the best defensive record in France last season and broke PSG’s stranglehold on the league title.
Mohamed Elneny is the fifth name mentioned, the 29 year old right footed midfielder has only been given one Premier League start at Arsenal this season so far.
