Newcastle United eye January swoop for Tottenham’s Harry Winks

Tottenham midfielder Harry Winks has emerged as a prime January target for cash-rich Newcastle United.

Harry Winks, 25, has struggled for opportunities this season, featuring in just three Premier League games so far. He has been brought back into the fold by new manager Antonio Conte, who enjoyed his first Premier League victory with Spurs on Sunday in the Matchweek 12.

Despite that, the Englishman could still leave Tottenham, with competition in the Antonio Conte-managed club’s midfield strong. Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe wants a midfielder with Premier League experience who can help his side avoid relegation this season, and Winks fits the bill, although the Magpies will face competition from the likes of Everton, Aston Villa and Brighton for his signature.

Newcastle picked up a point after drawing 3-3 with Brentford on Saturday in Eddie Howe’s first game in charge of the club, although the 43-year-old unfortunately had to watch the game from home after testing positive for Covid-19.

Eddie Howe has a lot of work to do at Newcastle

With a joint-worst defensive record and not a single clean sheet on board, it’s clear for everyone to see where the Magpies’ real problems lie at the moment. They were all over the place defensively against Brentford, conceding three goals in the process with coordination between the defence and midfield nowhere to be seen.

There’s a lot of work that needs to be done for Newcastle to steer away from the relegation zone. The priority has to be reinforcing the backline in the January transfer window. With just 15 goals scored and no wins recorded after 12 games, Howe must also look to bring in a prolific goalscorer.

In addition, signing a central midfielder to compete with the likes of Jonjo Shelvey, Isaac Hayden, Joe Willock and Sean Longstaff would make sense.

Harry Winks could be a smart signing for the Magpies

Harry Winks is the latest player to be linked with Newcastle. The central midfielder’s stock has tumbled over the last 12-15 months due to a combination of injury problems, form and lack of opportunities at Tottenham. At 25, the Englishman is gradually heading towards the best years of his career and has to start playing regularly to fulfil his top potential.

Even if Conte, who replaced Nuno Espirito Santo earlier this month, has restored Winks into his starting XI, the fierce competition in Spurs’ midfield could see him leave and join a club where he’ll get regular game time. This makes Newcastle a perfect player for the England international, whose qualities are exactly what Howe’s team are really in need at this moment.

A crisp passer of the ball and a tenacious tackler, the 25-year-old would add the much-needed creativity and energy to Newcastle’s midfield that has looked out of sorts since the beginning of the campaign. Winks’ addition could see the Magpies have more control on the ball and allow Howe to try the 4-3-3 formation with Shelvey and Willock in midfield.

We’ve all seen how good Winks can be when he’s starting week in-week out and he just needs to go somewhere where he will be playing regularly. Thus, a move to Newcastle might just be a great option for him.
