Nagelsmann reservations resurface as Tottenham hesitate on top target

Concerns about Julian Nagelsmann among Tottenham chiefs could see the club move on to alternative targets in their search for a new manager.

Spurs are on the hunt for a new boss after calling time on Jose Mourinho’s tenure on Monday. The Portuguese manager left with the club sitting sixth in the league after another inconsistent season. Ryan Mason has taken temporary charge, winning his first match against Southampton in midweek. His next assignment is the League Cup final at Wembley on Sunday.

But while Mason takes care of matters on the field, those off it are looking to appoint the man who will lead the team next term and beyond.

Ex-Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri has been linked, as has Leicester’s Brendan Rodgers. Although, the latter has moved to pour cold water over speculation suggesting he could move to North London.

Their first choice replacement, though, is believed to be RB Leipzig’s Julien Nagelsmann. The German has impressed during his time in the Bundelsiga, where he has also coached Hoffenheim.

He led Leipzig to the Champions League semi-finals in 2019/20, and has them second in Germany as things stand.

At just 33, it is no surprise his achievements so far have made him one of the most highly-rated young managers in Europe.

His profile certainly suits Daniel Levy’s image of what he wants in his next manager. Levy would like to see a young coach with an attacking style and ability to develop young players in the hotseat.

    Nagelsmann not to everybody’s taste

However, others behind the scenes at Tottenham are not convinced that the German would be the right appointment.

According to a report in the Express, some figures at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium believe Nagelsmann may view Spurs as a ‘stepping stone’ to further his own career.

Manchester United, Chelsea, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich are all said to be fans of him. Should Nagelsmann continue to dazzle, clubs of that ilk could make a move for him further down the line. And Spurs seem far from confident that they would be able to stop him leaving to take one of those offers.

Therefore, they suggest that Tottenham could choose to focus on other candidates. But, they do not rule Nagelsmann out of the running either.

Convincing Nagelsmann to join in the first place could prove to be a difficult task.

Leipzig sporting director Markus Krosche has already come out to make it clear Nagelsmann is happy where he is.

“When you do a good job, you arouse desire,” Krosche said. “But Julian feels comfortable because he has everything he needs here. The team is developing great.

“That’s why I see no reason for him to switch – especially since he has a valid contract with us.”

But journalist Christian Falk has disputed those claims, stating Leipzig would be willing to let him join Spurs for the right price.
