Move over Kalvin Phillips: Leeds ace on course to stake his own international claim – opinion

    NFL Betting

Leeds United can be very proud of Kalvin Phillips’ budding international career.

The midfielder has broken into the England squad after years of hard work, becoming the first Leeds player since Alan Smith to start a game for the Three Lions, and although he is the first in 16 years, he will not be the last.

Leeds have a number of English stars in their squad who will have one eye on every squad announcement from here on in, and now that Phillips’ England dreams have come true it’s time to focus on another United star’s international claim.

What scoreline does this iconic Leeds image belong to?

Now, it’s important to remember that it’s early days in the season, but after three goals in four games in this campaign, Patrick Bamford must at least be on Gareth Southgate’s radar.

The striker has consistently proven he has the footballing IQ to be a massive success, after all, his xG last season was over 34.77, but for far too long his finishing touch has alluded him, but that looks to have changed.

Bamford has been lethal this season so far, and if that continues, the England manager won’t be able to ignore him for too much longer.

Of course, that’s a big if, Bamford hasn’t performed like this in the Premier League before, netting just one top-flight goal before this season, but stranger things have happened.

It only takes a sustained decent period of form to get into the squad these days, especially when you’re a striker consistently finding the back of the net, and worse players than Bamford have been handed chances in the past.

Can Patrick Bamford get into the England squad?

Jay Bothroyd got a cap despite being a Championship player, Bobby Zamora earned two caps while being nothing more than a mid-table target man, while Rickie Lambert played for England 11 times despite spending the first 10 years of his career outside of the top-flight.

Bamford for England? It would have sounded ridiculous this time last year, but if he keeps this form up, he will soon be in the conversation.
